HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The Purpose of Establishing the Nishi Tokyo City Cultural and Arts Promotion Association

Tanashi and Hoya, the former municipalities, rapidly developed after the war and became urbanized societies. Along with changes in lifestyle, citizen-participatory events have been gradually expanding and revitalizing each year. Especially, places like Hoya Komorebi Hall, Nishi Tokyo Civic Hall, Tanashi Community Center, and various public halls have served as bases for citizens’ cultural activities. Additionally, there are regular exhibitions such as painting and photography exhibitions, along with active participation in various handicraft-related circles. While leveraging the human resources of traditional and daily life cultures, there is a need to promote and further develop the unique cultural and artistic activities of Nishi Tokyo.

Currently, the approximately 190,000 residents of Nishi Tokyo come from various regions, and although the sense of hometown pride is not deeply rooted, there is a new sense of citizen participation steadily expanding through cultural arts and various events, which needs further development and enrichment. Furthermore, the circle of citizen activities extends beyond culture and arts to various aspects of civic life.

We aim to create a town filled with the scent of culture and arts by each enjoying a cultural and artistic environment and promoting independent and proactive creative activities. Moreover, we aspire to be a city that creates and disseminates culture and arts. This is the purpose of establishing the “Nishi Tokyo City Cultural and Arts Promotion Association.”
