UNITED NATIONS & OTOP

The League of Nations, established in 1919 after World War 1st. as the Covenant of the League of Nations, gradually weakened and eventually failed to prevent the outbreak of World War 2nd. Its successor, the United Nations (UN), emerged from the ashes of the League of Nations, with a renewed commitment to promoting international cooperation.

The United Nations, founded on October 24, 1945, with 51 member countries, is not a world government and it does not legislate. Instead, its purpose is to foster friendly relations between nations, facilitate conflict resolution, and it provide a means for deciding policies to maintain global peace and security.

As of February 2023, the UN has expanded its membership to 193 countries.

In addition to the UN’s global efforts, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), as an independent administrative institution of the Japanese government responsible for Official Development Assistance (ODA), plays a crucial role in international cooperation, particularly in developing countries.

Responding to Thailand government’s request, JICA has been dispatching overseas cooperation volunteers as community development workers since 2013. Moreover, the D-HOPE project, covering 76 provinces in Thailand beyond the capital city of Bangkok, began in 2017. The project complements OTOP initiatives by showcasing a Decentralized Hands-On Program Exhibition (D-HOPE), which draws on Japan’s regional development examples.

In simpler terms, I think this involves selling OTOP products and conducting workshops at international exhibitions or demonstrating locally produced dishes using local vegetables and fruits harvested by the producers themselves.

In September 2021, the D-HOPE project by the Ministry of the Interior’s Community-Driven Development (CDD) Bureau and JICA won the Participatory Governance category at the Public Sector Excellent Award 2021, organized by the Thai Prime Minister’s Office. The award was presented by Wissanu Krea-ngam, Deputy Prime Minister, as reported by the newsletter dated November 2021 (partially quoted from the articles about OTOP reported by Mr. Ozaki Yoshihiro, JICA expert activist, which was posted to the Japanese Chamber of Commerce, Bangkok by JICA.

Through interviews conducted on November 6, 2023, we will report on how the OTOP concept, particularly the Krajeud Bag, has evolved.

Using this opportunity, we express deep gratitude to Mr.Yuttana Anothaisintawee, CEO of Triple Pim Co., Ltd. and OTOP designer to offer his designs to develop new products for 76 prefectures participating in OTOP. Please read her speech in English.
